support to PROFESSIONALS

This section aims at providing information about the range of services which can be offered to professionals from various professional backgrounds or to agencies.

Working with children and adults who have suffered from trauma can affect professionals as they try to hold and heal their pain and suffering. Managing risk in all its forms can be stressful and emotionally demanding and may even lead to secondary trauma. This goes often unacknowledged not only by managers and the public but also by professionals themselves. This is why it is important for professionals to have opportunities to share their experiences, receive guidance and support by more experienced colleagues and supervisors and find ways of "looking after themselves" through self-care as much as caring about their clients.

Individual and Group Supervision and Consultation

Systemic supervision & consultation can be offered through the following:

  • Individual supervision (face to face or by skype)
  • Group supervision
  • Professional consultations   (individual or group)
  • Agency-based consultation

It aims to provide support to a single agency, individuals or groups of multi-disciplinary professionals

TEACHING AND TRAINING

Systemic skills training can be offered through the following

  • Workshops on key systemic ideas and skills
  • Agency based training
  • Family therapy team work

It can support professionals during their training in systemic and family therapy or professionals from other disciplines who are interested in gaining or enhance their skills in working with families through providing clinical placements

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GROUPS

We all face many challenges in our workplace and we need to create a reflective space to share experiences and dilemmas and think about our professional identity. This is an opportunity to learn from each other and feel supported in a safe, stimulating and learning environment. This form of support requires a commitment to regular attendance as part of a closed group of professionals across disciplines. It aims to promote reflective practice through interactive and experiential learning and will involve case discussions, individual, pair and group activities/exercises.

The group will meet every 6/8 weeks on an agreed topic for 2 hours. Examples of topics are the following:

  • Our Professional secure base and default position in our practice
  • Stresses and strains: the power of creative practice
  • Navigating complex professional systems: our relationship to diversity
  • Our relationship to change and irreverence as a strategy for survival in changing organisations
  • Who do we think we are? dreaming of a different future

Topics are agreed in the first meeting when a group contract is drawn so it can be tailor made to the needs and expectations of a speficic group of professionals.Other groups with a more specific focus on systemic ideas and skills could be arranged if there are enough professionals to form a close group.

TESTIMONIAL

The group has really been really helpful in supporting and inspiring me personally and professionally. The format suited me very well - just the right amount of structure and direction balanced with space for free discussion and further development of ideas. The numbers and mix of professional expertise and experience was really beneficial and stimulating. For me it may have been easier to start a little later at 6.15 or 6.30 due to travel and working commitments. I think two hours worked well but a more regular meeting of monthly would have probably given the group a slightly more cohesive feel. I liked thinking about my secure base as that is highly significant to my work and as we discussed the creativity and diversity evenings threw up some surprising and fascinating ideas for self-development and awareness. I was initially unsure what I specifically wanted from the group  -  mainly more peer support and stimulation which I really did get - as well as useful local networking and a deepened group experience. I think your personal warmth, hospitality, extensive experience and clear enthusiasm for the work really made the group what it was - many thanks!   (Child and adolescent psychotherapist)
